Dua Lipa Dedicates BRIT Award to More “Women Taking Over the World”

Dua Lipa took home the award for Best Female Solo at the 2018 BRIT Awards and she seized the moment to make a very important dedication.

The “New Rules” singer took to the stage with her younger sister and brother in tow. While on the stage, she first acknowledged the fans who “helped make all [her] dreams come true” before moving on to her siblings and explaining why she brought up with her. She said, “But the reason I did this was, at the bottom of my album, I thanked everyone and I also told them to believe in magic because it’s real and this is the closest I’ve come to it. So I wanted them to experience it firsthand.”

She then went on in her speech to give a shout-out to the women around the world who she hopes take over and the women who have gone before her and other women her age to set a good example. “I want to thank every single female who has been on this stage before me that has given girls like me — not just girls in the music industry, but girls in society — a place to be inspired by and look up to and have allowed us to dream this big,” she proclaimed. “Here’s to more women on these stages, more women winning awards and more women taking over the world.”

Dua Lipa was one of the few artists at the BRITs to bring politics to the forefront. When she arrived on the red carpet, she accessorized her lush pink gown with a white rose, a symbolic gesture adapted from those who attended the Grammys earlier this year, to call attention to the Time’s Up movement.

And fans sure appreciated Dua’s speech, with many people on Twitter celebrating her speech. One person wrote, “Isn’t she just … inspirational. When you are comfortable listening to music that your daughters listen to then you know it’s a class artist.”
