After a long wait Netflix has finally confirmed that Lupin has been picked up for season four. The good news – announced mid-May 2025 – was accompanied by more good news, as the streaming giant revealed that production is already underway.
The gentleman thief Assane Diop (played by Omar Sy) crept back into Paris in October 2023 for a new series, featuring improbable raids on the rich.
Our modern-day Arsène Lupin managed to cheat death, rescue his mother and betray his bestie Benjamin, all before he decided to hang up his collection of the Maurice Leblanc books and turn himself in.
So what could be next for Lupin? Will we leave him to while away his days behind bars, or could the man who always has a next move up his sleeve have one last ploy laid out for season four?
Read on to find out everything you need to know about the fourth instalment of Lupin.
When is Lupin season 4’s potential release date?
As mentioned above, Lupin is returning for season four. The news was officially announced on Netflix’s Tudum, as well as on Instagram with a video that featured Sy’s Assane in Paris.
“Je suis de retour,” said the Assane Diop actor, translated to reveal: “I’m back.”
While there is no official release date just yet, the news of Lupin‘s return and production status is likely enough to delight fans who have waited over a year and a half for news of the show’s renewal.
Season one of the hit Netflix action drama debuted on 8 January 2021, followed by season two later that same year. Season three was a much longer wait, arriving on 5 October 2023.
It will be even longer before fans will get the next instalment, given that filming for season four has only just kicked off.
We would hope that a new season will arrive some time in 2026, but you can bookmark this page and check back here for all the latest updates.
Who will be in Lupin season 4’s cast?
Lupin is the ultimate star vehicle for Omar Sy, so naturally he is set to reprise his role bringing back Assane’s boundless charm.
Elsewhere in the cast, there’s Claire (Ludivine Sagnier), who has now left Paris with Raoul (Etan Simon), Assane’s mother (Naky Sy Savané) and Assane’s best friend Benjamin (Antoine Gouy) – but they could all likely return to the scene if they get word that Assane is out of prison.
On the police force, there’s Lupin enthusiast extraordinaire detective Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab) and his more sceptical colleague Lieutenant Sofia (Shirine Boutella).
Assane’s father Babakar (Fargass Assandé) could also reprise his role in flashbacks, as could young Assane, Claire and their gang of friends.
Then there’s the final twist, which saw Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) appear in the same prison as Assane – so we’d expect him to be back for a third season. If Pellegrini is still in the picture, we might also see the return of his daughter Juliette (Clotilde Hesme).
What will happen in Lupin season 4?
Netflix have been tight-lipped when it comes to those details but, in the statement as part of the aforementioned Tudum announcement, the streamer teased more “plot twists and captivating characters” that will “constantly [surprise fans].”
In which case, what better place to start than that major cliffhanger of the Pellegrini reveal at the end of the third season?
We last saw the morally bankrupt businessman at the end of Lupin‘s second outing, when Assane finally exposed him to the people of Paris, restoring his father’s good name.
So his presence in the same jail – one door down from the gentleman thief’s cell, in fact – could be the catalyst for some kind of Shawshank-style jailbreak.
If we do see Assane back on the outside, we can expect the typical Lupin fare of trickery, guile and a hoard of new disguises for Assane to pull off.
What else might we expect? Lupin writer George Kay has previously teased the possibility of a Sherlock Holmes crossover, given that Lupin and Sherlock meet in the books – albeit under the name Herlock Sholmès.
“Speaking really honestly, there have been [discussions],” he told Radio Times. “There’s some ideas circling around that, that I have, that I’m really interested to explore.”
He added: “The Arsène Lupin fanbase, which is evident within the show, would have to lock antlers with the Sherlock Holmes fanbase – you want to take it to a really meta level.
“Having that kind of level of fun would be really cool, and it’s not something we haven’t discussed.”
Whether Holmes factors in the future of the show or not, we can always expect the world of Lupin to be expanding, just as it does in the source material.
“When you read the books, Lupin has a lot of accomplices,” Sy previously told Entertainment Weekly. “But [in the show] he had the one, which is Benjamin, but he needs people, [so he] hires them like he does with [Philippe Courbet].
“So it was interesting to have that. And I think it’s going to be more interesting maybe one day having like a big cast with a lot of people.
“Because the thing is just being the mastermind, you cannot do everything by yourself, you need people. It’s also one of his skills, to bring people with him. It was really cool to play with that. I think it’s a good aspect of Lupin.”
