Zayn Malik is mourning the loss of former bandmate Liam Payne.

The “Pillowtalk” singer, who rose to fame as a member of One Direction alongside Liam, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, shared a heartfelt remembrance of his late friend.

“Liam, I have found myself talking out loud to you, hoping you can hear me,” he wrote on Instagram Oct. 17. “I can’t help but think selfishly that there was so many more conversations for us to have in our lives.”

Zayn then shared what he wished he could have told the 31-year-old before his sudden passing in Argentina.

“I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life,” he continued. “When I was missing home as a 17 yr old kid you would always be there with a positive outlook and reassuring smile and let me know you were my friend and that I was loved.”

Calling Liam his lost “brother,” Zayn noted that he “can’t explain to you what I’d give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly.”

In fact, Zayn admitted that he relied on Liam a lot during the boyband’s rise to fame, even when they disagreed at times.

“Even though you were younger than me you were always more sensible than me, you were headstrong, opinionated, and gave no f–ks about telling people when they were wrong,” he wrote. “Even though we butted heads because of this a few times, I always secretly respected you for it.”

The 31-year-old—who shares 4-year-old Khai with ex Gigi Hadid—explained that Liam was also the heart and soul of One Direction’s songs.

“When it came to the music Liam, you were the most qualified in every sense,” he shared. “I knew nothing in comparison,l was a novice child with no experience and you were already a professional. I was always happy to know, no matter what happened on stage we could always rely on you to know which way to steer the ship next.”

Saying he “will cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart forever,” Zayn added, “There is no words that justify or explain how I feel right now other than beyond devastated. I hope that wherever you are right now you are good and are at peace and you know how loved you are.”

Liam died Oct. 16 due to injuries sustained after a fatal fall from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to a press release shared by Argentine officials. He was 31 years old.

Zayn and Liam were brought together after being grouped with Harry, Niall and Louis to form One Direction on The X-Factor in 2010. Following their run on the competition show, where they placed third, the boy band became a global sensation, selling more than 50 million records, per Billboard, before going on a hiatus in 2016.

Zayn, who left the band in 2015, and Liam had a complicated relationship over the years, with the “Strip that Down” singer sharing in 2022 that despite their differences, he would always have his former bandmate’s back.

“There’s many reasons why I dislike Zayn,” he said on Impaulsive with Logan Paul in May 2022, “and there’s many reasons why I’ll always, always be on his side.”

After all, the whirlwind years in One Direction led to the bandmates forming deep bonds.

“There will always be things we disagree on but I will always, always be on his side,” he wrote in a post on X, formerly twitter on June 2 of the same year. “That’s family. Zayn is my brother and I will stand by him forever.”

In 2023, the two officially laid any rumors on their rocky friendship to rest when Zayn, 31, shared an update about his new music on Instagram, and Liam commented, “This sounds big already.”

Zayn went on to reply, “Appreciate it bro, thanks for the love.”

Following Liam’s sudden death, his family remembered him in a heartfelt tribute.

“We are heartbroken,” they said in a statement to the BBC. “Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul.”

Liam’s former One Direction bandmate reflected on all he wished he could have said to him.

“I can’t help but think selfishly that there was so many more conversations for us to have in our lives,” Zayn wrote on Instagram. “I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life. When I was missing home as a 17 yr old kid you would always be there with a positive outlook and reassuring smile and let me know you were my friend and that I was loved.”

“Even though you were younger than me you were always more sensible than me, you were headstrong, opinionated, and gave no f–ks about telling people when they were wrong,” he continued. “Even though we butted heads because of this a few times,I always secretly respected you for it.”

Zayn also called Liam “the most qualified” musician in the band “in every sense.”

“I lost a brother when you left us and can’t explain to you what I’d give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly,” he wrote. “[I] will cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart forever, there is no words that justify or explain how I feel right now other than beyond devastated.”

Louis shared a lengthy statement to his own Instagram, commemorating Liam’s legacy and his friendship.

“I am beyond devastated to be writing this but yesterday I lost a brother,” Louis wrote. “Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul. I first met Liam when he was 16 and I was 18, I was instantly amazed by his voice but more importantly as time went on I got the chance to see the kind of brother I’d longed all my life for.”

The “Back To You” singer—who cowrote many One Direction songs with Liam—continued to note Liam’s impact on the band.

“Liam was an incredible song writer with a great sense of melody, we often spoke of getting back into the studio together to try and recreate the writing chemistry we had built up in the band,” he added. “And for the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam.”

“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” the band wrote in a joint statement on Instagram. “In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”

Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry continued to emphasize the impact Liam had on their lives.

“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever,” the statement added. “For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”

“We are heartbroken,” Liam’s family, including mom Karen, dad Geoff, and sisters Ruth and Nicola, told the BBC. “Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”

I can see many of you on here are struggling with that right now and i understand.”

And Halsey finished by sharing a fond memory of Liam.

“A few years ago i purchased a home that Liam previously owned,” she continued. “There were rumors the house was haunted. He assured me it was not, and i believed him. because i know the ghosts that haunt us aren’t tethered to buildings. They live in parts of us that are harder to reach and they go wherever we do.
