After 20 years since the club moved to the Jose Alvalade Stadium, Sporting Lisbon has announced their third shirt for the 2023–24 season, with the motif paying tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sporting Lisbon relocated to a new stadium close to the old one in 2003 after spending over 50 years at the former stadium bearing its founder’s name. The home team played host to MU in the inaugural game played at the new stadium. At the time, the club had just won the Premier League.
In that preseason friendly, 18-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo made his professional debut with an outstanding effort that helped Sporting Lisbon win 3-1. The opportunity to join the Red Devils was made possible through this competition, and the rest is history.
Ronaldo’s name is on the chest of the third Sporting Lisbon jersey.
The new Sporting Lisbon shirt will have “CR7” stamped in lieu of the manufacturer’s emblem in recognition of Ronaldo’s performance on that particular day.
Take a trip down memory lane with us, said a tweet from Sporting Lisbon. The greatest in the world have united into one on August 6, 2003 – August 6, 2023, the 20th anniversary of Jose Alvalade Stadium.
Sporting Lisbon will compete in the 2023–24 season wearing the black and yellow home jersey as they look to improve on their fourth-place finish in the Portuguese league the previous year. In this arena, Sporting Lisbon last triumphed in the championship during the 2020–21 campaign.
